Become a Better Leader by Mastering the 3 Categories of Leadership Effectiveness

Tags :

Chapter 4: The Trilateral Leadership Ledger of Chris Brady and Orrin Woodward’s Launching a Leadership Revolution begins with an impactful statement from Hugo Grotius. Grotius was a Dutch lawyer, writer, theologian, and statesman of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century.

On the topic of self-government, Grotius had noted that leadership boiled down to the individual and made the following observation of men in positions of leadership:

“He knows not how to rule a Kingdom, that cannot manage a Province; nor can he wield a Province, that cannot order a City; nor he order a City, that knows not how to regulate a Village; nor he a Village, that cannot guide a Family; nor can that man Govern well a Family that knows not how to Govern himself.”

What this statement really boils down to is the fact that one cannot be an effective leader over others until one learns to lead over oneself.  Stop and think about that statement for a few moments.  When we think of leadership, we often think of a position of influence, a title, or a credential. However, true leadership potential lies in one’s ability for self-discipline.

moralcompassStop and think of the people in your life that have influence over you, for better or worse.  Put some thought into why you feel these people influence you.  Is it their personality? Do they make you feel good when you are around them, or inversely make you crave their hard to get attention?  Are you inspired by their abilities, drive, or work ethic? Or perhaps maybe you just feel that they are a good person and respect the position of their moral compass.

Resolved: To Develop the Art and Science of Friendship

Tags :

In Chapter 7 of his book “Resolved: 13 Resolutions for Life”, Orrin Woodward identifies eight essential principles for building and maintaining long-term “philia” friendships; philia meaning the love between two friends.  I won’t cover all eight principles here (because part of the journey of reading through “Resolved”is your own self-discovery); instead I want to focus solely on principle 3 – True Friends Approve of One Another, simply because this one continues to strike a cord with me personally.

In Order to Lead You Must Follow

“In order to lead you must first learn to how to follow”

I have pondered this statement a lot recently, mostly because it is easier said than done in my opinion. There is a lot trust that must be placed in order to place ones belief in to the hands of another. How does one know who to follow? In today’s society everyone wants to lead – yet they have no results to speak of. Worse yet, their views are shrouded in hypocrisy.

Recently though I have found myself reaching for an olive branch. There are things that I want to know and grow in professionally and the only way to accomplish that is to find other people with the results I want in those areas. For someone with little trust or belief, this has been especially hard.  However, desperate times call for desperate measures – so here I am. I have found that I have reached the peak of my potential and unless I start trusting in others I will go no farther.

So how does one go about learning to follow?

How Ordinary People Achieve Outrageous Success

Tags :

Just over a month ago, I was sitting down on the couch on a Saturday morning to enjoy my regular cup of coffee.  I looked over and saw that my monthly LIFE Leadership subscription had arrived.  As expected, the package contained a book and 4 audio CD’s.  What was not expected was a book with a rather peculiar name, “Edgy Conversations.”  It had a catchy red and black cover with art work that one would expect from a graphic novel.  It even had a Ninja on the front!  I hadn’t read a book with a Ninja on the front cover in some time.  What did I have to lose?
